Lighting on a Budget

Most of the staffs in high schools are not allotted a huge budget. In addition, if there is money to spend it usually is poured into cameras, microphones, and computers. So what options are out there to help with lighting?

The staff at the Academy of Scholastic Broadcasting has created some helpful tutorials about adding lighting to your equipment for pennies on the dollar. Watch this video to learn more.

Shooting Video With a Focus on Sound

Sound in video is more than just the voices from your interviews and reporter. Sound can play a major part in telling the story. Natural sound can accentuate information and tell the story. Listen and watch the following video which has a very focussed use of natural sound to punctuate the story.

How did the production use natural sound to open up the story?
How did the natural sound then create a transition in the script?
How did the sound emphasize what the officer was saying?
What effect did the sound have on the overall piece?
What would have been lost without the natural sound?

Three Point Lighting Presentation

Lighting is a key element to making an interview or the anchor look their best. Often the broadcast crew will have to make do without the equipment one needs for a three point lighting setup. But if it is at all possible try to follow the instructions in this presentation on lighting.

Microphones: Handheld

A quick note about handheld microphones…

IMG_7608Handheld microphones are commonly seen being used by reporters on the scenes of breaking news and at sporting events. Handheld microphones are usually microphones with cardioid polar pattens – which simply means that the microphone is designed to reduce noise into the microphone.
