Show Style

The look of the show is very important and sometimes very difficult to achieve. The look is affected by everything from what the reporters are wearing to where you film your desk shots. The following is a break down of what you can do to distinguish your show at the beginning of the year and how you can keep it going.

1. Format – The first thing the staff needs to consider is what is going to be the format of the video. Will it consist of two anchors reading the announcements? Or will it be a show filmed in studio where you interview guests. Click here for a variety of show formats.

2. Anchor/Reporter Wardrobe – Anchors make up the look and feel of the show as much as any other element. Establish a dress code early on for the staff and stick to it. For men depending on the show, a coat and tie with minimal prints is expected for a formal news show. For women, a dark business suit or a blouse and dress pants is expected. Be conservative with jewelry.  Be sure not to wear any necklaces or ear rings that will distract the viewer or hit the microphone. Be sure that the hair is pulled away from the face. Click here for a video on what to wear and how to appear for a show.

3. Studio – The establishment of a formal space for anchors to present the show is always a good place to start. It could be as simple as a desk and a background that is a solid color. There are many options here. The key is to not let the idea of needing a huge studio get in the way of producing great stories. See our page on video sites from high schools around the nation for examples of studios.
