Role of the Staff

studentsThe decision to become a member of a news organization is an exciting moment. With the prominence of video on the web and through social media, the work of a student broadcast journalist is able to be seen all over the world.

The responsibility of being a staff member is a great one. There are however a few objectives that every staff member should keep in mind and vow never to violate. Many of the following objectives are also included here on the student contract.

1. Strive to act responsibly as a member of the staff and understand that you represent the organization at all times, in the school and in the community.

2. Do your best to manage time appropriately and meet deadlines. Other staff members depend on your work. Do not let them down.

3. Use the equipment with care. It is impossible to prevent all accidents from happening, but the equipment is costly and necessary for the staff to do their jobs. If even one camera is lost or broken, it will affect the production of the show.

4. Learn and develop a strong sense of ethics as a journalist. Never sacrifice in pursuing the work of a journalist.

5. Understand the law. Do not violate copyright law by using photos, video, or music from someone else without their expressed written permission.

6. Be always on the lookout for new ideas.

7. Take time to interview people and tell their stories as you would want your story told.

8. Do not expect anyone else to do your job.

9. Be open to learning from others.

10. Listen to your adviser and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

And last but not least, remember you are working with a team. No one staff member can make the production on their own. Appreciate one another. Help others when you can. You will never know when you will need the same courtesy.
